K-LS1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
Simple Definition
Activity
In short, the goal of this standard is to communicate to the class what organisms need to sustain life. In other words what does anything living need to do to keep on living!
Activity 1:
Sometimes simple is better! Discuss with the class why they like snack time. Why is it needed? Why do you become hungry? Does everything need food? What would happen if you didn't eat or snack time was pushed later?
Activity 2:
Begin by asking the students what plants need to grow. Compare things like water to the food we eat. Place three plants on a surface where they will receive equal light. Water one of the plants a lot, water the second plant with half that amount, and give the last of the plants little to no water at all and chart growth every few days. What has happened to the plants? Which ones grew the best, and which ones did not grow at all?
